I'm in Canada much the same with high prices and restrictions on R12.
I have had a couple of 505s converted to R134A
    they work fine
the conversion, test and fill was cheaper than the R12 fill when it was still available
They only add an adaptor connector to one of the fittings
Don't hesitate to do the conversion there is nothing to fear.
It was way less than $150 CDN

You remember that we use Freon Gas in the air conditioning set up of our
      cars in the 80s.

How would you do actually get those running again within our Pugs or
      Talbot, by rebuilding these units?

Refilling with Freon is not authorized here and there.

Do we have to replace the hoses and parts?

      Could this be adapted?

      Any idea?

      Stan.
