Took a roadtrip to Spokane and it finally happend: something broke!
First thing that happend 10 miles away from Spokane my passenger side
outer cv joint decided to disentegrate! CV boot was intact so it
wasn't a problem of no grease. I had to get it towed, rent a car and
wait till tomorrow for someone to bring my parts from home in seattle
and they didn't get to Spokane untill late at night (10PM). My spare
driveshaft is from an 89 (non-abs) and my 91 has abs.
Having some tools but not all is not a good thing when your cv joint
breaks. I had to buy a bottle jack, an electric impact wrench, and a
#18mm socket. Ball joint nuts don't come off by manual wrenches. Once
we got everything that has to be loosend (remember this, 11mm is also
7/16) getting that drive shaft out is killer without an air hammer.
So what we ended up doing was taking the cv joint off the spare
driveshaft and put it on to the one on the car. That was not fun.
with no metal clip to hold the boot on we turn to macguyver and wrap
electric tape round and round. Beleive it or not it held and is still
holding because I checked it and I just got home!
To make matters worse around 5 o'clock in the afternoon on my way
home, 110 miles to go and the alternator belt tensioner breaks! Good
thing I planned for a belt or tensioner breaking because I brought a
short and long belt (dayco 5050395 short). With only a borrowed
wrench from the gas station (1/2 is also 13mm!) since I had only
brought #10, 12, 14, 17 but no 11 or 13 which is really common on the
mi16. Well what I really needed was a #22 for that bolt that holds
the alternator but a 1/2 wrench and a hammer do well for that sort of
thing. After 45 minutes of trying to get a 39.5 inch belt on without
a tensioner with only a 1/2 wrench I got it on and that damn battery
light went out and just in time to watch the sunset.
Lessons learned: Always check the tools you bring with you and make
sure you have everything to work on ANYTHING that breaks. Expect
something to break so you don't feel bad when it does. Have triple A,
they are great for getting you out of trouble. Once you get a chance
get rid of that stupid tensioner and put on a shorter belt.
All in all I still got home.
BTW:
I am now looking for a cv joint or passenger side driveshaft for abs.
Can someone help me out?
