In IL you can get a trip plate too, but I wouldn't bother. I would just
have a bill of sale type of thing from the previous owner to show that you
just purchased it. I would contact your insurance agent though and get it
covered for the trip.

Subject: Oregon to CA with no plates...do I need a "trip permit"
Hi group-
Just bought another Mi16, and I'm flying to Oregon on Sunday and
driving it back home to California. Apparently, in Oregon, you own
your license plates, and the previous owner of the car wants to keep
them to put them on his next vehicle to avoid some DMV fees. He says
you can get a "trip permit" to drive through OR with no plates. I've
actually never heard of this, and I don't think they do it in
California. Usually the cars I've bought, even out of state, come
with plates and you can cruise around with the previous owner's
signature on the old title until you get it transferred.
So...should I try to make it home with no plates, or should I bother
trying to get an Oregon "trip permit"?
