            hi all
the everlasting project to swap the dreaded ZF auto trans. for a 5 speed
manual continues with the speed of a languid amoebae I have now got a 5 speed
box, non-overhauled. What would you folks do first whilst it is still on the
    bench as it were?

The FIRST thing I (personal preference only) would do is drain the box
through a WHITE "T" shirt, if already drained, then put 1 qt/ltr of diesel fuel
in, plug all holes and shake vigorously. Set on jackstands for 5 minutes, then
drain through a WHITE "T" shirt. The reason is to see how much of your
transmission comes out on the "T" shirt. You can tell by the color of the particles,
ETC., what you need do with the transmission.
Why diesel? Solvents and gasoline, dry's the parts, diesel is oil based
and will furnish SOME lube when turning the gears to listen for damage. After
you determine all is good, put 1 qt/ltr of 10W30 (or the same as your engine)
back in to keep things lubricated. <;-))
