The absolute best way to travel is to rent and let someone else fix it.
Now that said, that and every tensioner is there for a purpose, to save
the wear and tear on the other component's main drive bearings, because it only
allows a select amount of sideward pull to the pullies, they are also helpful
in changing the belts. Pulley bearings can be lubed, even sealed, if you are
    willing to. <;-))

...Lessons learned: Always check the tools you bring with you and make sure
you have everything to work on ANYTHING that breaks. Expect
something to break so you don't feel bad when it does. Have triple A,
they are great for getting you out of trouble. Once you get a chance
get rid of that stupid tensioner and put on a shorter belt.....
