Welcome to the Peugeot List, Jose!

You do not say whether the car would go backward originally or now. If it
did or will go backward normally, but not forward, the problem probably was
    and is now the transmission.

If it suddenly won't go forward or backward, without previously showing
signs of slippage, the problem is usually either the splines on the torque
converter or the front splines of the driveshaft. If the speedometer moves
up when you give it gas in gear it's the driveshaft. If the speedometer
worked before the failure, but stands still when you rev it in gear now,
then it's probably the torque converter splines that have failed, not the
transmission. Generally if the transmission has failed the pan will have a
lot of sludge in it, and there may be a lot of metal powder or shards on
    the magnets.

The transmission from an 88 will not be the same as the 86, assuming the 86
is non-turbo. It will fit, if you use your original bellhousing and torque
converter, but the shift characteristics and speedo gearing may be off.
