My 1985 Ford Thunderbird Elan had this feature. Though informative, the ever
changing numerical display was just as irritating as the digital speedo.

You can already have one of these.

Mind you, I'm not sure if you can transfer the pieces over to another car,
but this exact device came standard on many Cadillacs in the 1980's, when
they were running the HT4100 V8.

You could also get these kind of mileage computers (with digital displays)
on the Chrysler Imperial (1981 to 1983) and a couple of Lincolns, as well as
some big exotics like the Aston-Martin Lagonda, and probably a number of
other American cars (mostly GM and probably mostly cars that shared Cadillac
platforms - Buick Riviera, Olds 98, etc.).

Re-wiring the circuitry would probably be quite difficult for installing it
on another car, but you could easily buy the pieces out of a junked
1981-1985 Eldorado/Seville, and I *know* they came with them.
