    But I want to know actual mpg. The vacuum gauge can do a lot of things,
    and I use one regularly for diagnosis, but it can't do that. Also, I am
    skeptical of the precision of the relationship between high vacuum and
    mpg. To keep the vacuum up you have to keep the revs up. On an upgrade,
    or under acceleration, when the vacuum drops downshifting will bring it
    back up. But that is not necessarily more economical.

    In fact the driving style of the economy run drivers in the '70s was to use
    zero vacuum all the time--wide open throttle to 50mph then shut off engine
    and coast in neutral to 15mph, then full throttle to 50 again. I was told
    that this worked because of throttle plate carburetor design. The
    venturi's efficiency is greatly disturbed by a partially open throttle
    plate. I have no idea how this applies to normal driving, with fuel
    injection, but I want to know mpg based on distance travelled divided by
