Some Toyotas came with this useless 'feature'. I went out and installed
one on my Cressida. Had all the wiring ready to go. I assume it's as
accurate as they get, but there a couple of things to bear in mind.

     1. Any kind of daily driver in the city will get a lot of non-moving
idle-time. 2. It is utterly worthless if it doesn't have a range
feature 3. You'll get more accurate results with a pad of paper and
filling up in the same manner each time (same pump, etc.) 4. After six
months of meticulas recordkeeping, if you're like me, you'll bag the
    idea.

The way I see it, it you "drive for mileage", you'll get 5% better than
just driving sanely. Just common sense driving mileage habits (watching
traffic ahead, not speeding up just to slow down for the upcoming red
light, etc.) will get you most of the way there. The rest of the
mileage is centered around how well your car runs and the proper air in
your tires. You know this stuff. There's nothing new.

I rented a Prius where the most exciting thing in the car was the
elaborate mileage display which showed regenerative braking, etc. You
ignore that after a couple of days also.

The best way to find out how well your car runs is to go through
emissions. I've done it just for grins before. Here, you can do it for
    just $20.

My conclusions: I'll never get 25 mpg in the city with my turbo. I'll
never get 30 on the highway. I just can't drive 60.

One way to look at it is to "figure the delta" which is just a fancy
technical term for "difference". You'll kill yourself over 3 mpg?
That's why I don't sweat it when gas goes up. Wow, I'm paying 181/gal
instead of 169. Tankful delta: under $2. Got bigger fish to fry.

My last thought on gas. Hey, for all of you who think we should pay
what they do in Europe do (~$5 per gal) - get real. The US is
dimensionally huge. In Europe you drive for two hours and you're in
another country! That only gets you 1/5 across Texas. $5 would KILL
the US Economy. Maybe when they stuff us in communes and we all do
honerable work with our hands and backs will gas prices become
    insignificant.

Would any of you electronic geniuses be interested in designing the
circuitry for a miles-per-gallon meter for fuel-injected vehicles?
