I canšt get the key into the Neiman ignition tumbler of my 89 505 DL
wagon (5 spd, 155K). I suspect it has something to do with the pin that falls into
the rectangular opening at the end of the key. No previous problems or hints
of a problem. Steering is locked (as normally).
Any clues? Can ordinary automotive locksmiths fix this?

Copy this message and make the tool. Put it in your wallet for future
use. With the ages of our Peugeots, this tool WILL come in use sooner or later.
I put this out several months ago.

One method is to file the end of the key off until the "slot" near the
end of the key tip is "open." Then the key will go in with a little
wiggling/jiggling. If you have a cheap after-market key made of brass, use it as it's
easier to grind away. But only that key will fit the ignition.

The proper Peugeot tool for that fix is a small paper clip.

The Neiman ignition lock uses a security tab to keep odd keys from
operating the ignition. The tab goes across the slot, not with the slot. The tab is
shaped like the letter "L" with a cross shaft at the junction of the two legs
of the letter. As your key goes in it strikes one leg causing the other to
rotate into the slot at the end of the key. If the tab gets worn, it does not
fully rotate back into the rest position. The next time you insert your key, it
falls down in front of the key, not allowing it to travel the last 3 mm to full
    seat.
The repair is to take a small paper clip, straighten it and bend the
tip (1 mm long) to 90 degree's to hook the tab and return it to the top
and rotating it into place. Then try the key. DONT FORCE IT PLEASE. Keep the
tool in your wallet for future use.

As for commerical lock picks, another tech bought one from snap-on and
could not get it to work. I just walked over with my paperclip and fixed the
car. Just realize that it is small, about the length of the width of the
    paperclip.
