Another cheerful drive into the Himalayas

I have driven my '94 405 GLD up to Shimla in the Himalayas (2206
Meters above sea level) last week from Jaipur in Rajasthan (India)
and am still here on some work. The total distance covered is
approx. 650kms. The car has returned an average of 15kmpl with the
A/C on in the plains (45degree temperature outside). The climb
uphill was easy and I was keeping pace with (believe it or not!!) a
new Merc C200K Kompressor!!!! The only reason I was able to do that
was 1. My driving skills were probably better than the other guy and
2. the 405 gives fantastic roadholding on winding mountain roads (or
any other road, for that matter). The grip is fantastic and I hardly
had to use the brakes to slow down. Thanks to Peugeot for making
such fine-handling cars.
I will post pics of the trip after I get back to Jaipur next week.
Some small problems after reaching here:
1. The glow plugs had to be changed as only one out of three were
working!! The car was starting on one glow plug all this while in
the plains.. The replacement was easy as the local company TATA uses
the same glow plugs in their vehicles. A total of Rs.450.00 (about
USD 10.00)USD was spent in replacing all 4 glow plugs.
2. The power steering pump started leaking and all the oil was lost.
The fault was traced to a leaking inlet nozzle and was repaired by
winding a simple thread around the end and re-tightening it in
place. The cost was Rs. 150.00 (about USD 3.30) for repair charges
as well as new power steering oil.
I will be doing an extensive trip of about 2000kms in June into the
Himalayas again and hope to drive up to about 3800 Meters altitude
to the highest motorable road in the world at Rohtang.
Bye..
