Mike is completely correct.
The US government is not the hurdle- its all in the business plan of
Renault and Peug/Cit.
Way, way back, in the day, as my kids say, I heard that Citroen
pulled out in part because of the bumper height regulations- the DS
went up and down and it was too exasperating for Citroen to
contemplate compliance with those regs. I have read a few articles
on Peugeot, and my general sense is that they never really had a plan
for success here- they just thought, for a while, that they ought to
be here. I am not sure they ever really wanted to be here. But all
that is in the past, and I am glad that we can enjoy at least some of
their older products.
On the bright side, new regulations - this would be the government
doing something right- mandate switching to low sulphur diesel
production at domestic refineries this year. With the introduction of
low sulphur d., a significant obstacle to the introduction of the
terrific common rail diesel engines, one of Peugeot's strengths, goes
away. Perhaps they would reconsider the market in light of that, and
of the new demand for innovative small cars. Maybe we'll even be able
to ' get smart ' in the U.S. A., as Mike can in Canada.
