It's actually "near-side and "off-side" which refers to truck loading
and unloading practices.
Being in Australia, I can only speak for "right hand" drive vehicles and
the following is how I understand it:
"near-side" is the side nearest to the kerb (nearest to the footpath)
"off-side" is the other side (amazing) and refers to the side that goods
(from truck) are "off-loaded" from. Perhaps, the driver doesn't have
as far to walk to "offload" the goods (right hand drive vehicle).
"Far Side" is a comic strip devised by Garry Larson (sorry).
