I think diesels will only be a viable choice in places
where premium unleaded and diesel are less than 15%
    apart in price.

At my local Arco station in LA, premium is $4.17,
diesel is $4.49 (although I know of a station about 6
miles away where I saw it for $4.09 a week ago...so
I'll assume $4.19 now). Thus, in California, I think
there is a viable market for them.

When I go back to Boston for work, the last time I
filled up my '89 Mi16, premium was $3.39, diesel was
$4.10. I doubt too many diesels will be sold in MA.

    I have put in a pre-order for an '09 BMW 335d, which
is due in October/November (the official order can't
take place until August) based on the fact that even
with a price premium for the car (I'm guess $1000,
although I've heard through the BMW blogs that it
might even be priced $2000 LESS, since it may be the
only way to sell them!) the resale value should be
better than the 335i...I have been using the
GOlf/Jetta TDI vs. gas models as a basis.

I'm not sure how BMW will market them....to be honest,
I'd rather see the 204hp 2 liter 4 cylinder diesel
engine in a 320d, since it gets 50+mpg on the highway,
but maybe that will come later. BMW does have that
performance image to maintain in the US...

16 versus 23 in the city, and 25 versus 33 on the
highway. And 428 lb/ft of torque should make for one
    fun car.

    Cheers,
    Paul
