Diesel in the Netherlands is about € 1,20-1,25 per liter = about $7/gallon. As compared to petrol wish is about 1,50 per liter = €8.72 per gallon. That’s why we have tons of small vehicles driving around (up to 900 kgs) for fuel economics. Diesels have the great advantage being more fuel efficient then petrol engines but then again, a hybrid car gets about the same these days.

In my area (south of Netherlands) there are tons of Germans crossing the border to get gas in my town. In Germany its even more expensive then over here. I know that there are a lot of guys with older benzels or VWs that buy sunflower oil and use that in their car. Every time one passes you, you think Mc Donalds is on the move.

All gas stations over here sell low sulphur diesel to reduce emission. And most diesels sold nowadays come equipped with a powder filter to even further reduce emissions. For a long time the Dutch government promoted the installation of such a filter by offering a subsidised installation. (about 600 euro rebate)

    Cheers

There was an article recently in Car & Driver? that delineated the price
difference in European and USA diesel. It has to do with the refining process.
We use one type of refinery in USA and it produces 75% gasoline, 25% diesel.
In europe, they use the other (there are only two types) refining process and
it produces 50% diesel and 50% gasoline. I believe that the article indicates
that we actually buy some of our gasoline from Germany--they produce too much.
So, the more diesels that are purchased/driven in USA, the higher the price
    of diesel (supply vs. demand).
