The short story is (as I remember) was that a re-pair shop had
promised the 2 women that owned the car a new brake job, tore
everything apart in both front and rear, had little or NO IDEA on how
to work on 1966 Peugeot 404 POWER DRUM BRAKES, told them a very low
beginners price ( I think someone thought it had brake pads!! ), then
after realizing that they were in for quite a pickle, jacked up the
price to almost an unbelievable amount, which in turn,, started the
rub.....

the women balked at ,,, """but you told us this""" , and the shop kept
the car for some 3-4 months, thus led to an impasse, and to a final
order of,,,,'THEN, JUST BRING THE CAR BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shop brought the Convertible 404 back alright, apparently
dragging the front end somewhat on the ground, dumped the car onto the
driveway pad, and left.

All the brakes in 1 box, 2 drums in the other, one front axle with NO
bearings,, the other with part of one set....... and a glass jar with
some of the round bearings and the remains of a bent cage in it.

My initial response to the add was 'Convertible 404 needs brakes', and
me being Joe Wagner, all 404's coming to me needed brakes, and I was
getting good at them.........

Brakes I can do-- but towing a car some 16 hours on the highway
with NO BEARINGS in front, is not logical,, I WAS STUCK IN TAMPA!!!

I do remember one number 7304, or 7403 was one side, the other
considerably larger,,, and CAGED Ball bearings.

I did go to the local Peugeot dealer, and basically was blow off real
quick by the parts guys who did not have a book 404 or even a
microfiche, and balked at calling NJ Headquarters....
they just said "we gotta order anything that old..."

So I drove to 2 Bearing shops, both gents helpful, loads of books
and cross referencing, but NO bearings IN STOCK or cheap. It was to
be over $220, order only, cash also. NO exact delivery date.

Funny too cause when I got to the second bearing place, the first
guy had called the second shop to see if THAT guy had the bearings in
stock....

This is when things got interesting. I told the second Bearings Shop
guy that I am STUCK, Just about out of money, and needed to get going.

He suggested matching surfaces with anything he had in stock, and this
is what I did. I also used washers for depth, and had to adjust
everything to my AXLE NUT WHICH WAS A PEEN NUT, OR STRIKE NUT WITH
PUNCH, and did NOT have a adjuster or a hole for a coder pin.
1950's teck, verses 1970;s teck,, course I had the 50's teck....

I think I did have to drill thru the end of one spindle, to hold on
the axle nut, with a coder pin

I also had to match axle studs since one or 2 studs were broken or
stripped on each axle with those 3 lug wheels....

I got it all together in 2 days work, grinding as needed, dirty as a
coal miner, but safe and secure, then drove like a wild man towing the
car behind me back to ohio.

I even think I wrote a letter to the Bearing shop (second shop) to
thank the guy when I got back home,, that all went well, and thanks
for him using his brain to expedite me back home..... it all worked out.

Just goes to show if you have enough information and time,, anything
can be accomplished.
