Getting closer on no-start but still stumped

Summary: '84 XN6, problem at first was that car would quit after
about 20 minutes running and wouldn't restart; then it wouldn't start
at all. Per the suggestion of several people on the board (special
thanks to Lance), I was able to check the coil. It makes a spark
under test conditions (direct power to coil, new spark plug wired
with new ignition wire to high tension lead), so the coil itself
seems to be good. The positive lead supplies 12.5 volts with
ignition switch at "run"; the negative lead supplies 3.3 volts, so it
seems to be getting power from the ignition system. However, with
normal wiring restored, the coil does NOT make a spark under cranking
[tested with plug wired to high tension lead].
I gather from this that the coil is capable of making a spark and has
the power supply to do it, but it isn't being TOLD to make a spark,
so to speak. So what do I look at next? The distributor pickup?
How does one test that? What else might it be?
I appreciate any help. This one is new for me.
