Substitutes for Peugeot a/c receiver-driers?

I have a vague recollection of reading here once that a VW a/c receiver-
drier could be substituted for the Peugeot 505 original. Does anyone
recall or have independent knowledge? Does anyone know of any better
substitutes for the receiver-drier in the system? TIA,
