RE: ZF transmissions

I have long thought that one of the 5 speed ZF autos would be a nice upgrade
for a 4 speed auto 505.
I have driven a number of cars with the ZF 5 speeder, it is IMO the best
auto trans available, certainly better than the M-Benz equivalent, it allows
you to select & hold whatever ratio you want, including downshifting under
braking, I actually got a tyre chirp from the (fat) rears of my friends BMW
840 doing this once so it really does work! There are quite a few lying
around here in the UK too as BMW, Jaguar and Range Rover have all used the
box in volume models from around 1996 pretty much up to date. The
cleverness of the box is controlled by an ECU so even if it was a bolt in
job as far as the hardware is concerned (which it might be, I don't think ZF
would have made it more difficult than they had to when designing the thing
in the first place) you'd have to figure a way of activating or maybe just
locking out the electronic functionality. This needn't be that difficult if
you knew the pin-outs for the ECU connection and the signals the box
responds to.
As to the hardware side, if the converter housing bolt pattern is the same
as the 4 speeder that'd do it and ditto with the rear housing, the Pug is
unique in this respect of course because of the torque tube. The core of
the box is probably a different length you'd think meaning cutting or
extending the torque tube and of course there'd be issues with the shift
lever, rear mount etc etc. I keep trying to buy a 5 speeder on UK Ebay to
explore exactly these questions but haven't got one cheap enough yet! If
anyone out there's got one or can get one or Mr Flintstone can be persuaded
to liberate one from the Boulder-Mobile lets measure up! I've no shortage
of 4 speed boxes here to dismantle.
BTW it's exactly the same here with the "metal guys", over the last year
scrap metal has gone from being a liability where we had a problem with
people abandoning unwanted cars to a significant asset with people now
queuing up to take my wrecks away and I've had people stealing individual
alloy wheels from my garden to weigh in for GBP 5. I'm hanging on 'til the
week before the Beijing Olympic opening ceremony which is when I reckon the
market will peak..........
Regards to all
Chris

There are alot of cars getting scrapped these days, now that the metal
guys are paying alot of money for old vehicles (especially in my area).
My local junk yard has piles of ZF 5 speed gear boxes from Jeeps, for
instance. Could someone give some info on various parts interchanges
from ZF applications? There's a guy at the yard who resembles Fred
Flintstone who just beats the aluminum cases with a hammer until the
gears fall out. Whenever I need something internal, he's always happy
to remove it in a more gentle manner. I was just thinking we could post
some interchanges because anything new coming from Europe is getting so
expensive.
