    Yo, Gang:

Again, thanks for all the advice. Personally, I'd be surprised if it
were a clogged cat, as the cat was only a year old. I do know that
someone hung an XN6 exhaust system on Suzy-Q instead of the larger
system that the ZDJL shares with the N9TE - indeed, I have three cars,
all wagons, that I acquired in that state. Concerned about back
pressure, I never pushed Suzy-Q to the limit. The oxygen sensor was
barely 3 months old. I did wiggle the connection on the AFM per
several suggestions. Doctor Sochauxicus (AKA Mike Aube) who performed
Suzy-Q's auto-psy says the Bendix problem was a loose wire - that
starter is in a terrible place to see, much less work on. John and I
couldn't even find the ignition wires, let alone the distributor on
the ZDJL. Lovely engine to drive, absolute horror to work on!

BTW, Mike Tippet - glad I am not the only one who does the "me behind
me" test. I won't consider a purchase without doing that first.
Despite 300 choices, very few can pass the test, as I am 6'3" and
drive straight arms. I also completely agree with your evaluation of
the current offerings from PSA - their superb turbo-diesels being the
only exception. Too bad the Peugeot lads would not offer the twin
turbo 2.2 in a suitably refreshed 505. That would be formidable and
I'd be there in a flash.

Having driven 505s exclusively since 1983, and realizing that all good
things must eventually come to an end, I have been looking for a
possible replacement. Three cars elicit at best mild interest: the
Bluetec Jetta due this fall (arrives with a black cloud over its head
re: VW reliability and surly dealer service); Saab 9-5 wagon
(Ergonomics, a key consideration for me, are close to the 505, but for
me, not much else) and the Honda Accord (I'm really not quite ready to
go Japonais, despite the ever mounting compelling reasons for doing
so.) As I have said before, the Ford Mondeo estate with the PSA turbo
diesel engine might also be a contender (can't stand the looks of the
current model, though) but it is not for sale here in NA. Pourquoi
pas? So, we soldier on with the 505s, year-round, daily drivers.
Yes, there have been a few roadsides, but I figure for the pleasure
they bring, and until something better comes along, they are worth it.

Again, thanks to the members of this great list for the quick and
helpful responses. Suzy-Q, RIP. You were a fine car, right to the end.

    Mike Murphy in Toronto
