How to check an AC.Delco coil?

I've received several tips on checking a coil's function, but they
seem to relate to the canister-style coils with one big lead in the
center top and two smaller wires/terminals flanking it. My XN6 has
the AC/Delco coil, which looks much different.
The coil comes as a square unit, with the actual coil at one end and
a large rectangular cast box at the other. Going into the box are a
green and a red lead that head to the distributor. Coming out the
front bottom of the coil, underneath the main lead, there is a single
lead going to a small black plastic box unit bolted down next to the
coil (I assume that is some sort of resistor). There are two more
wires coming out from the coil, one of them (grey) leading to a
cylinder-structure about an inch long bolted down on the other side
of the coil; another wire (red) comes out of that cylinder and heads
somewhere else. The other wire out the front of the coil (brownish)
just heads somewhere else. The confusing thing to me is that when I
checked the inputs, the white input read 12.5 volts, and the brown
wire had 3.5 volts coming in.
Are those readings normal? Which lead is the "positive" and which
the "negative"? Is white the "high" and brown the "low" input? How
do I check to see if the coil is faulty? (as noted, it has power
coming in, but does not make spark when cranked. Whether that is due
to bad coil, or lack of signal to fire, I don't have the expertise to
tell.)
