I do not consider myself a piston expert by any means but I have been
listening to what the 2.6 mitsu people are saying about their rebuilds.
Forged is best for high boost applications. Forged also has some
detriments. They are: piston slap when cold and the need to match the
piston to the block (because of less than perfect piston tolerances). JE is
a well known forged piston manufacture. Some recent hearsay is that they
found a way to control these problems. I mention forged pistons for 2
reasons.
1. Brian Holm's post a while back about purchasing forged pistons (I hope
JE).
2. An intuition that Francios personality is like mine, and he will have an
ever increasing urge to "crank up the boost" once this car is running. It's
just too easy.
In regard to the stock pistons being forged, I don't know but, I seriously
doubt it, Forged pistons are considered racing application only because of
the problems mentioned above. When the time comes to rebuild my 2.6 I will
seriously look at forged and hyperetautic (spelling?) pistons. N9TEx owners
might not have that option. In the case of forged vs. stock there is no
doubt in my mind I would go forged.
Now if Alan is correct and "all Moving part are forged" (which I am also
skeptical) The addition of Forged pistons would make that block rock solid.
Even if a N9TEx Only had a forged Crank w/ forged pistons It should still be
pretty tough.
Again, I'm Not a piston expert or engine builder. Please tell me if you
disagree.
