Were you serious, I didn't even understand that.
1. How about taking the shifter out.
2. Cutting about 1-2 inches out of the shaft.
3. Welding the 2 pieces together.
4. Put the shifter back in.
Whala a short, short throw shifter.

To ponder this, take apart a wreck and look at the lever and linkage that
exists. I think you'd need to mod the cover but you might be able to
squeeze in a new setup up using multiple rose (Heim) joints and pivots
replacing the sliding bearing and simple pivots to reduce the friction
while moving the point where the shift rod attaches to the shifter itself
up a little, thus making the throw shorter.
