RE: Short throw shifter

I looked into this after finding that when I put the seat back far
enough to be comfortable with the pedals, the shifter was too far
forward in 1, 3 or 5 to reach without lunging. Mechanical idiot that I
am, it seems to me that merely increasing the length of the reach to the
lower shift linkage rod (in effect, lengthening the reach of the bottom
of the lever) would have the desired effect; and then I could bend the
upper part of the lever to bring the knob further rearward, and shorten
the lever to boot. I'm sure that those who know more than me about
these things will tell me why it isn't that simple; but I have an extra
shift rod, so I may try it anyway if it won't blow anything up.
